I'm not saying they don't win period, just saying for the most part they don't win titles. Had a professor somewhere and can't remember where or even who it was that had this whole big thesis about it.

Reports: Weis to coach Notre Dame in 2009; school mum
    ESPN.com news services

    Updated: December 3, 2008, 9:34 AM ET

Charlie Weis To Return Next Season As ND Head CoachWith the defeats and the rumors piling up, Notre Dame may be ready to stop the Charlie Weis speculation.

According to The Associated Press, a person familiar with the decision said the university will make the official announcement later Wednesday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the information had not been authorized for release.

Multiple media outlets reported on Tuesday that the embattled coach will return for another year and that an announcement could come in the next 24 hours.

Scout.com, WNDU-TV and the South Bend Tribune cite anonymous sources that say Weis will coach the Irish in 2009.

"There has been no official word from the university, but we have it from a couple of sources that he will be back for 2009," WNDU sports director Jeff Jeffers told ESPN Tuesday night.

The school, however, would not confirm or deny the reports.

The Chicago Sun-Times contacted the school, but Brian Hardin, the sports information director for football, said that he was not aware of any announcement. Notre Dame athletics director Jack Swarbrick did not respond to requests for comment from ESPN.com, and Weis was on a recruiting trip to Hawaii and California.

"When we have something to say and it's the appropriate time to say it, we'll say it," Notre Dame spokesman John Heisler said.

Swarbrick had said after the Irish lost 38-3 to USC on Saturday that he would evaluate Weis' performance and planned to meet with the coach as scheduled on Dec. 8.

Weis has a 28-21 record in four seasons at Notre Dame. His .571 winning percentage falls short of the .583 of predecessors Bob Davie and Tyrone Willingham.

The Irish lost to Navy last season and this season lost to Syracuse when the Orange were 2-8, marking the first loss ever by Notre Dame to an eight-loss team.

Weis has led the team to back-to-back disappointing seasons of 3-9 and 6-6, with the 15 losses the most ever by the Irish in a two-year span. The Irish earned BCS berths in his first two seasons, going to the Fiesta and Sugar bowls.

Weis has seven years left on the 10-year contract he signed midway through his first season as coach of the Fighting Irish.
